Montreal, Canada May 23, 2006.
Indifferent weekend for Marc.
Marc Flood and his team had tested on the New Castle, Indiana track the week before the event and had posted the second best time of the week against some of the acknowledged stars of the series. The plan had been to learn how to set up the new 2006 chassis. Unfortunately, these tests were conducted under continuously cold and rainy conditions so only the 2005 “rain” chassis was ever used and no data was collected for the 2006 machine.
Qualifying:
“For this race weekend, the event was held under cold but sunny conditions and as a result we did not have any historical data for the adjustments for the adjustments required in such circumstances. It was really a whole new adventure” confided Marc to the press. Due to the sheer number of participants in the ICC Shifter class, the organizers had to create two distinct groups, that is to say a group with the odd kart numbers and another with the even kart numbers. Marc was assigned to the first group for his qualifying run. He posted an excellent time which provisionally placed him 5th on the grid out the 27 drivers competing in the first group. For the second group the track conditions improved. With more “rubbering” of the track and the increased track temperature, tires were more “sticky “and created faster qualifying conditions. At the end of the two sessions, Marc now found himself in a disappointing 25th position on aggregate out of 54 qualifiers.
Pre-final and final:
Marc had no difficulty finishing in the top 15 during his “elimination” race to move forward to the final which is comprised of only 36 of the 54 drivers present. At the start of the race Marc was in 27th position hoping to that a few drivers ahead would hit trouble so that he could make up ground. No such luck. The only incidents occurred behind him. After a long race Marc made up some places, but only up to 21st by the end. Marc had this to say after the race: “This should have been as better result. The lack of knowledge for the chassis set up meant that we had burned through our tires by mid-race and from then on I was no longer able to attack and had to play a defensive role and just keep the machine on the “black top”. It felt as though I was driving on ice”.
