Montreal, Canada June 6, 2007.
Marc Flood already back on the podium at the “Petit Monaco” in Three Rivers.
After missing the start of the season due to prior commitments it didn’t take long for marc to get back into the “groove” and score a podium finish in only his second weekend back behind the wheel.
Marc took the Thetford Mines race weekend on July 7-8 to reacquaint himself with his machine and already was on the pace by qualifying on outside pole. In the feature race Marc had the misfortune of being hit by a back marker who must have missed his braking. The effect of the contact caused him to be sent airborne but he still managed to finish in 6th place in a highly competitive field. Next up was the “Petit Monaco” in Three Rivers. This is a great event that draws over 15,000 spectators and is set (much like the Monaco GP) on the waterfront of the city and even includes a long tunnel where the shifter karts blast through at 160 KPH (100 MPH) only to be met by bright sunlight and a very tricky chicane at the exit of the tunnel.
On the Saturday it poured with rain and Marc spent the day trying to get his machine to his liking and learn the track as this was his first visit. Unfortunately, due to ongoing mechanical “gremlins”, he was only able to cover half a dozen laps and therefore unable to familiarize himself with the lay out in preparation for the all important qualifying round on Sunday morning.
On Sunday however, Marc was determined to be on the pace. After only 3 laps he had the track memorized and briefly held pole only to slip to third at the end of qualifying. Considering the lack of prior track time it was more than could have been expected.
So in front of 15,000 passionate spectators Marc lined up for the standing start on the harbor front in his 3rd place grid slot. Before the tumultuous first lap was over he was already in second spot. Then it seemed that first was within reach. By mid-distance the leaders were already lapping slower traffic and Marc fell upon some back markers who had slammed into some straw bales at the exit of the tunnel. In order to avoid hitting another machine he spun his kart and lost his second place but was sufficiently ahead of fourth place so that he easily still crossed the line in 3rd for a podium finish. In the process he also set the fastest time of the race! A good weekend overall
