Marc back on the podium !

Marc Flood had a substantially stronger weekend than of late to finish second in the pre-final and the final at the first round of the Coupe de l’Est held in Thetford Mines, Quebec this past weekend against a particularly strong field of competitors.

Qualifying and Entry:
The race entry was particularly strong for this weekend as several star drivers chose to make the trip to compete on this magnificent track where top speeds frequently exceed 150 KPH. Among the competitors were Philippe Gélinas (a frequent winner and star of the U.S Indy Racing League’s Stars of Karting Championship), Jonathan St.Laurent (a veteran former champion of karting), Louis Charles Filiatrault (2005 Coupe de Montreal champion), David Michaud (2004 U.S Winter Tour champion in Pro-Shifter) among others. Marc eventually qualified a comfortable third but had been second for most of the session until the dying moments of qualifying when David Michaud snatched the spot. Gélinas took pole.

Pre-final:
Marc was positioned right behind Philippe Gélinas for the standing start. At the drop of the flag Marc stuck to Gélinas’ bumper and held second place into the first corner while the rest of the pack battled for position. The two of them took off as the rest of the pack exchanged positions throughout the race. At the finish both Marc and Phillipe took the checkered flag with a substantial lead over the rest of the competitors.

Final:
For the feature final Marc and Philippe lined up on the front row. There was some concern that Marc might get squeezed into the first corner by David Michaud but it turned out not to be an issue. Marc rocketed away from the start line at the drop of the green flag and tucked in neatly behind Gélinas and that basically sealed the race. Again the two front runners put on a demonstration run and crossed the finish line as they had in the pre-final. As a gesture on Father’s Day, Marc gave away his trophy to his father. It certainly ranks as one of the best gifts his father has ever received!
