Another Championship Win for Marc Flood!!
Marc Flood dominates once again and wins his second championship of 2005!
Montreal, Canada-September 12, 2005. After winning the prestigious U.S based Florida Winter Tour Championship earlier this year in the hotly contested “Expert Shifter” class in I.C.C (where the machines routinely hit speeds of over 170KPH/100MPH) the young and talented Montréal based Marc Flood once again “blitzed” the opposition and ran away with the Quebec based Coupe de l’Est championship to secure his second championship of 2005.
Grand-Mère, Quebec, was the venue for the last round of the Quebec based Coupe de l’Est championship this weekend.
Qualifying:
Under cool conditions qualifying proved to be a very routine affair and Marc Flood easily secured the pole position for the pre-final.
Pre-final:
At the start Flood made a slightly slow start and briefly fell to second place but within a lap took over the lead and comfortably opened up a gap which he began to stretch. Luck, however, was not on his side. A faulty stud holding his left rear wheel caused the wheel to work loose and forced him into retirement from the race, but not before setting the fastest lap of the pre-final.
Final:
Having not completed the mandatory 70% race distance of the pre-final in order to score points, Flood saw his lead in the championship dwindle while his closest rivals picked up valuable points and ate away at his championship point’s lead going into the final event of the day. The pressure was on, therefore, to perform well in the final. Marc needed a second or a first place finish to clinch the championship. Starting from the last position on the grid, Flood was determined not to let the championship slip away. Flood made a perfect start but was held up briefly by a slower competitor for 2 laps thus allowing his rivals in the championship to open up a substantial gap and force Marc to make some chancy passing maneuvers but all without incident. Once Marc had a clear track in front of him he proceeded to reel of a series of fast laps setting a sequence of fastest laps of the race that went unchallenged. By mid-race he was already in second place and hounding the back of the first place runner (Danny Trepanier). On the next lap (not content with 2nd place) Marc tucked into Trepanier’s slip stream and dived down the inside of the corner after the long pit straight and took over the lead. From this point forward Marc controlled the gap between himself and second place by no longer pushing so hard in order to save his machine and not make any silly mistakes. At the checkered flag Marc crossed the line with a healthy cushion and took his well deserved victory lap and the championship along with it. Reflecting on his weekend Marc had this to say: “While I had fully expected to leave the weekend as champion, I had not expected to have not scored points in the pre-final and find my closest competitors in a position to potentially take away my championship aspirations. I therefore took the attitude that in the “final” I was going to take a “win or bust” approach. My father had told me that all I need was a second place finish to win the championship. What I didn’t admit to him was that I absolutely wanted the race victory to finish off this particular championship. Thank goodness it all worked out as I don’t think he would have been too happy if I’d ruined everything fighting over first place. All in all I am very happy with this year. 2 championship victories is more than I could have expected and this really “pumps” me up for the next US race in the “Stars of Karting” championship taking place in a few weeks in Austen, Texas. I would especially like to take this opportunity to thank my engineer (Steve Pinet), my father, the whole P.S.L Team (in particular Dominic Labrecque) and my sponsors who have all given me fantastic support and believed in me all year. Thank you guys from the bottom of my heart!”
